There isn’t much in the way of reality television that interests me. Despite the genre, they seem overly scripted and exaggerated. Maybe it’s just me but they don’t compare to any reality I have been a part of. When I started watching The Foster’s (completely by accident) I was immediately pulled in and have been playing catch-up ever since. It is more of a reality show than any reality TV I’ve ever watched. If you haven’t started watching here are a few reasons you should be watching The Foster’s.
It’s Real, at least it could be - Sure, there are actors and scripts, but the story arcs and lines are relatable. The characters could easily be based on you or someone you know. The Foster’s incorporates real-world topics like the foster system & adoption, the LGBT community, addiction, and sexuality. There is no overacting, which is a huge sigh of relief.
It Hits You Hard, right in the feels - I can’t think of any other show that has made me feel the emotions I feel during every episode. I’ve bawled my eyes out many times watching this show, and for the most part, they were happy tears. Even when a scene is heartbreaking I’m unable to turn away. It’s extremely easy to get entangled in the lives of the characters and feel what they’re feeling. And so many feelings; sadness, anger, love, cheer, sympathy, and empathy.
It’s More Than a Teen Drama - Teen dramas are an addiction for me - The Vampire Diaries, Teen Wolf, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Switched at Birth… I could go on and on. Most teen dramas are primarily targeted at, well, teens. The Foster’s is categorized as a teen drama, but it’s more than that. While most teen dramas focus primarily on the teen characters, The Foster’s gives equal (or almost equal) screen time to both adult and young adult characters.
They Don’t Sugar Coat it, the good the bad the ugly - Without being over the top or at all raunchy, The Foster’s shows life as life instead of as candy coated or a full-fledged travesty. Life is full of ups and downs, sunshine and rain. The Foster’s embraces all that in a tasteful way. The show centers around an interracial lesbian couple raising a family of biological, foster and adopted kids. That alone sets a course for many struggles. It doesn’t stop there, not even close, but I don’t want to share any spoilers.
You Can Watch it with Your Family, at least your teens - It’s rare to find a show that not only captures teen life but adult life too. Not to mention a show that blends the two without leaving either side lacking. I see The Foster’s as a foot-in-the-door to the inner workings of your own teens. Things you may not be so in-tune with but want to be. Things you may want to talk to them about but are not sure how to.
Depending on your personal parental guidelines this may not be suitable for your tweens and below since sex is a recurring subject throughout the series. Don’t get me wrong, they’re not glorifying teen sex but they do broach the topic. It goes back to being real. Despite what we like or approve of, some teens have sex. If you’re over the pretentious diatribe often seen on TV then The Foster’s is a wonderful alternative.
Have you watched The Foster’s Yet? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

This sounds like a great show. I love television shows that don’t try to portray life as all unicorns and rainbows. I’d rather see shows that keep it real.
