There are a number of health issues that can affect cats. You have the really bad ones like feline leukemia (FeLV) and feline HIV (FIV). You have some more common health issues like worms (there are so many worms!), fleas, and mites. And then you have feline health issues that you weren’t even sure were possible. It makes sense, but I honestly had no clue cats could get urinary tract infections. Especially boy cats. It’s not like they can wipe the wrong way and spread bacteria, which is usually how it happens in humans. But, alas, it is possible and it happened to us.
A few weeks ago, PrettyLitter sent us a month’s worth of their technologically advanced kitty litter to try. Most people’s first thought would be, “It’s kitty litter, how is it pretty?” and that was mine too. The way it looks isn’t what makes PrettyLitter special – it’s what it does when your cats use it. The litter is created to test acidity and alkalinity levels, and for the presence of blood. Kind of like litmus strips, but in litter form.
There’s a number of things that can happen when your cat urinates on the PrettyLitter. The litter could turn yellow or olive-green, which is a good thing – that’s normal. It’s when you see other colors that you need to start planning a trip to the vet. That’s what happened when I saw the blue color in the litter box, blue indicates a high alkaline level, which is typical for urinary tract infections. Sure enough, that’s what was going on. If the litter turns red that’s a signal there’s blood present in your cat’s urine, and green is a sign of abnormal acidity – common with metabolic issues.
I was impressed by the accuracy of the litter, and love that it helps you monitor your cats health. The colors let you point your vet in the right direction so you’re saving time and potentially saving your cat from something serious. The only thing I’m not crazy about is that PrettyLitter doesn’t clump. It was weird leaving urine soaked litter in the litter box at first. I eventually got used to it though, and since PrettyLitter does have odor absorbency smell wasn’t an issue.
