The back to school season is a great time to find incredible savings on more than just clothes, notebooks, and pencils. There are incredible deals on electronics too, which makes this one of the best times to upgrade to a new laptop. With so many options on the market, shopping for a new laptop can get confusing and even frustrating. That’s why you should know what to look for before you start shopping.

What to look for in a school laptop
A software suite like Microsoft Office. A word processing software will be one of the top used programs on a school computer.
The amount of storage is somewhat dependent on the grade level that will be using it. Take into account whether the student using the computer will have a big music library or a lot of pictures on the laptop. The more they have, the more storage they’ll need.
When it comes to laptops for school, size does matter. Choose something that is easy to carry anywhere but with a keyboard that’s big enough to use comfortably. Aim for a screen that’s between 12.5 and 15.6 inches for a good balance of portability and usability.
The last thing a student wants or needs is a laptop that dies before they get to do a final save. That’s why battery life is one of the most important things to look for in a student’s laptop. 6+ hours of battery life is the minimum to look for and 8+ hours of battery life is ideal.
The CPU determines the performance of the computer, so you want to be sure the processor is up for the challenge of your student. Ideally, you want to choose a laptop with a processor that is no more than 3 generations behind the latest.
RAM is one of the most important features of any computer as it determines the speed of the computer and how fast programs responds. The reason a lot of computers are so inexpensive is that they have only 1 or 2GB of RAM. Modern laptop users need a minimum of 4GB of RAM to be efficient, but the more you can get the better.
My favorite laptop for this back to school season is the HP 15t Best Value touch. It has a lot of bang for very little bucks. My favorite features are the:
- 7th Generation Intel® Core™ i7 processor
- 8 GB memory; 1 TB HDD storage
- 15.6″ diagonal HD touch display
- Up to 8 hours and 30 minutes of battery life
This is a fast laptop with customizable storage to be sure your student can work and play without missing a beat.
