If there’s one comedian in today’s entertainment industry who is known by pretty much everybody, it must be Kevin Hart. Thanks to his hilarious turn in the hit 2017 Jumanji reboot, Welcome to the Jungle, Hart is now as famous as his co-stars Karen Gillan and Jack Black among the younger generation. His four-time appearances as the MVP for the NBA’s All-Star Celebrity Game has brought him to the attention of die-hard basketball fans, and his starring roles in comedy smashes like Get Hard and Night School made him a hit with the cinema crowd. That’s in addition to the fans who pack venues across the world to watch his sell-out, stand-up comedy shows.
There’s no doubt about it, Kevin Hart is ubiquitous! A self-declared “big goddamn deal” (and who am I to argue?), it seems that we know all there is to know about the comedy star. Although he may well wear his Hart on his sleeve, he still has a few secrets hidden away that may surprise even the biggest comedy fan. Here are three things you may not know about Kevin Hart.
- He was Impoverished as a Child
It’s incredible to think that the man currently living a million-dollar lifestyle in Hollywood started with nothing. Even though he works in unbelievable and hilarious anecdotes about crazy relatives into his onstage routines, in Hart’s case, they are all too true. Growing up, his mother single handedly raised him and his older brother — Hart’s father was a substance abuser and estranged from the family. Momma Hart did all she could for her sons with the limited resources that she had, but like many single-parent families, they were quite poor. Living in a one-bedroom apartment in Philadelphia, Hart would sleep on a bunk bed in the hallway that he shared with his brother.
- He Began as a Shoe Salesman
Right now, Kevin Hart is sitting on a fortune. Forbes placed him on their annual Rich List on numerous occasions, and he is reportedly worth a whopping $120 million. However, his first job was as a shoe salesman. Although he ultimately quit to pursue a comedy career full-time — even preparing for homelessness if it didn’t work out — Hart’s natural charm and charisma made him a good salesman. Though he even admits his selling technique was a bit out of the box: “I’d ask (customers) what they were looking for in a shoe…then I’d go in the completely opposite direction.” On reflection, it’s a good thing that comedy career worked out after all!
- Kevin Hart is a Poker Champion
In January of this year, Hart left pro-poker players astounded when he won a massive amount in a game of Texas Hold ‘em with what many would consider a low hand. If you’re unfamiliar with the rules of the classic card game, Hart won $40,000 with a “king high” hand — a feat that even the pros around him can rarely pull off. The poker world may have been in shock at his win, but Hart has been a devotee of this challenging mind sport for some time. He even worked with a leading online poker platform to take on legendary sprinter Usain Bolt in series of challenges back in 2017.
