Mill Pond Alligators

One of my favorite things to do during the summer is go camping. There’s nothing like being surrounded by nature and unplugged, if only for the night. Sure I miss the constant Facebook updates, but the peace and tranquility from ‘roughing it’ are totally worth it. I wanted to jazz up our last camping trip with some zesty foods so I went to Walmart to grab my favorite hot sauce, El Yucateco®.

Going Camping

Since I like to stay minimalistic when we’re camping I didn’t want to pack unnecessary things. We have to canoe to our campsite so we left the big stuff at home. We did bring a platter to put our cooked food on. I thought it would be fun to make kabobs since they’re deliciously easy and portable. You don’t need anything except your meat, veggies, and skewers.Campfire-Marinades

kabob veggies

I took care of most of the prep work before we left for the campground. I cut the meats, fruits, and vegetables the night before and made a couple easy marinades. I left the meat in the marinades overnight so we could each build our own kabobs the way we wanted them. Mixing and matching what went on each allowed us to experience different flavor combinations. Everything was in plastic containers so they didn’t take up too much space – huge bonus.

El Yucateco® Red and Green Habanero hot sauces use fresh Habanero peppers, garlic, select spices, and seasonings. That means I don’t have to use a lot of ingredients to add flavor to my food. I paired the Red Habanero Hot Sauce with mangos to marinade our shrimp and used the Green Habanero Hot Sauce with Pineapple for the chicken. I made a teriyaki-inspired marinade for the beef using El Yucateco® Black Label Reserve Hot Sauce, which is a rich, smokey sauce made with fire-roasted Habanero peppers.

If you’re looking for ways to make your camping trip fun and memorable without breaking the bank here are some tips that work for me

Catipillar Camping

  • Use local sales sites to find cheap or free camping gear. Gear you want to have would be a tent, rope, first aid kit, sleeping bags, flashlights, and a cooler.
  • You want lots of water so save milk jugs and any other large containers you can to fill. Many campsites offer bath houses and water spigots for quick refills but be sure to check with the campground you plan on staying at.
  • While you can invest in a camping stove, nothing beats an open fire for cooking meals. Opt for shishkabobs and foods that can be cooked on a stick over those that need pots and pans.
  • Shop around for the lowest priced campsites. While it’s relatively inexpensive to tent camp, sometimes you can find lower prices nearby.
  • Save money by making your own bug repellent like this one. Don’t even consider going out without bug repellent or sunscreen.

  1. It has been ages and ages since I’ve been camping, but this would be something my family would love to try, nonetheless! Especially since my son loves spicy food.

  2. I would love to win a one of a kind custom designed surfboard. These are great prizes. We love hot sauce.

  3. We love this stuff at our house but we have never tried it this way before, I need to make these marinades! Also, that campfire picture is fantastic and love the giveaway, everyone wants a yeti!
